The history of department can be traced back to 1982 when the first batch of Economics was started with pre-degree course. Mar Thoma college Chungathara started its first batch of Pre-Degree 3rd group with optional- Economics, Psychology and Indian history in 1982. The BA Economics course started in December 1995 with Modern Indian History and Social Psychology as subsidiaries. The pre-degree course was delinked in 1998. The department was upgraded to Post Graduate department (M.A Economics (Self Finance) with Computer Application and Research Methodology) on 27th November 2004. MA aided course was started on 31st October 2013 and the inaugural function of the same was held on 1st November 2013.
